What Are Wool Pellets?
Wool pellets are made from raw sheep wool that’s been cleaned and compressed into small, easy-to-handle pellets. When you add them to soil and water them in, they slowly break down over time.
As they do, they release nutrients—especially nitrogen—back into the soil. Nitrogen helps plants grow strong stems and healthy green leaves. Because wool breaks down slowly, the nutrients feed your plants over time instead of all at once.
Why Gardeners Like Them
Wool pellets do more than just add nutrients.
- Hold moisture. Wool can absorb water and then release it slowly, which helps keep soil evenly moist.
- Improve soil structure. As they break down, they add organic matter that helps loosen heavy soils and support healthy roots.
- Reduce waste. They make good use of wool that might otherwise go unused.
They’re a simple, natural option for vegetable gardens, flower beds, and containers. Tomatoes, peppers, squash, greens, and even houseplants can all benefit.
A Farm Product with a Purpose
Shearing sheep is something that has to be done every year for their health and comfort. Not all wool is high enough quality for clothing or yarn. Turning that wool into garden pellets means nothing goes to waste.
It’s practical. It’s useful. And it keeps the cycle going—from sheep, to soil, to food on your table.
If you’re planting this season, consider trying a bag. It’s an easy way to support healthy soil while making thoughtful use of something that began right here on the farm.
